Drape clip is widely used in
surgical operations for the purpose of reducing infection and facilitating the
handling of skin around incisions. Typically, they consist of a flexible,
plastic film which is adhesive coated and which is applied to the area of the
operation, prior to making the incision. Surgical drapes are also used for
attaching treatment devices to patients after an operation such as catheters or
drainage tubes. Various proposals have been made in the past to design the
surgical drape so that handling of the sticky, flexible, plastic film is
facilitated. A further, recently developed use is for connecting a suction tube
to a wound for the purpose of stimulating healing of the wound. It is desirable
to use a surgical drape clip primarily to attach a device such as a catheter to
a wound area after an operation or for long term treatment, it is inconvenient
for the surgeon or nurse to have to adapt a standard surgical drape for this
purpose. It would be more convenient to have a surgical drape which was
suitable without adaptation to accommodate the treatment device.

Finger Pulse Oximeter
Finger pulse oximeter was
developed in 1972 by Takuo Aoyagi, is a non-invasive medical device for
monitoring a patient’s oxygen saturation and producing a photoplethysmogram. In
its application, a sensor is placed on a thin part of the patient’s body
usually a fingertip and in the case of an infant, across a foot. Two waves of
light are passed through the patient’s to a photo detector. The changing
absorbance in each of the wavelength is measured.
Reflectance pulse Oximetry may be
used as an alternative to transmissive pulse Oximetry. This method does not
require a thin section of the patient’s body and is therefore well suited to
more universal application such as the feet, forehead and chest. The pulse
oximeter may be incorporated into a multiparameter patient monitor. Mostly
monitors display the pulse rate and most are Portable, battery-operated pulse oximeters
are available for transport or home blood oxygen monitoring.
Because of their simplicity of
use and the ability to provide continuous and immediate oxygen saturation
values, finger pulse oximeter are of critical importance in emergency medicine and
also very useful in any setting including intensive care, operating, recovery
and determining the effectiveness of or need for supplement oxygen.

Flexible Eschmann Stylet
Eschmann Stylet is a narrow
diameter tracheal tube introducer with an outer diameter of 5 mm. often called
the gum elastic bougie, it is not made of gum nor is it elastic, the original
design is made of beige colored resin covering a fiberglass core. The total
length of the original version is 60 cm and the distal tip blends at an angle
of 38 degrees. The Eschmann Stylet is flexible but has some shape
retention. It is best handled by keeping the distal half as straight as
possible, inserting the upturned distal Coude tip under the epiglottis or,
preferably, above the interarytenoid notch if it is visible. Some operators
grip the bougie as a pencil, place the device with their right hand, and retain
their laryngoscope in the left, allowing an assistant to railroad a tracheal
tube into proper position. The narrow diameter provides easier target
visualization and its small upturned distal tip can be given a curved upward
shape to facilitate passage under the epiglottis.
The tracheal tube introducer is
used to facilitate difficult intubation. It should not be confused with the
more rigid stylet, which is inserted into the ET tube and used to alter its
shape prior to intubation. Unlike the stylet a bougie is inserted independently
of the ET tube and is used as a guide. Since the bougie is considerably softer,
more malleable, and blunter than a stylet this technique is considered to be a
relatively atraumatic procedure. Numerous case reports and case series attest
to the value of the Eschmann Stylet in difficult in tubation in the operating
room and more recently in emergency medicine practice.
